Submarine Sandwich

This one has as it's origins the way we made it in the 1970s at Pizza Chalet, then how Domino's Pizza made it in the 1990s. I found out how to make the best one. This sandwich goes by different names, including sub, grinder, hoagie, hero, or p' boy.

Ingredients:

Garlic butter (home-made recipe below), foot-long grinder roll, preferably sourdough, sliced pastrami, sliced roast beef, sliced salami, thinly sliced bell pepper, pepperoncini, sliced red or yellow onion, sliced provolone cheese, sliced black olives, sliced tomato, romaine lettuce, optional spices, Italian dressing.

Directions:

1. Slice the loaf length-wise, fully in half, or still foldable.
2. Spread the garlic butter over both sides of the halves (optional add finely grated Parmesan).
3. Broil until brown. Remove the sub.
4. Layer on both sides with pastrami, roast beef, then salami (or pepperoni).
5. Back under the broiler, until the top looks slightly crispy. Remove.
6. Add sliced pepperoncini, thinly sliced onion, and bell pepper. You can add any spices at this point.
7. Back under the broiler. Remove when it looks good. Splash with some of the dressing.
8. Add provolone cheese and top with sliced olives.
9. Back to the broiler. Remove when cheese is melted.
10. Add lettuce, and splash with more dressing. Serve hot or refrigerate to reheat later.

Garlic Butter recipe:

• 1 cup unsalted butter softened (salted OK)
• 1 tablespoon minced garlic, or more to taste
• ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 1 teaspoon garlic salt, or more to taste
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, or more to taste
• ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, or more to taste; ¼ teaspoon ground paprika, or more to taste. Chives optional.
• Gather all ingredients. Combine softened butter, Parmesan cheese, and minced garlic in a bowl until well combined. Mix in everything else. Let rest for at least a half hour.
